The Model 281 Proteus is a tandem-wing high-endurance aircraft designed by Rutan and built by Scaled Composites to analyze the use of plane as excessive altitude telecommunications relays. The aircraft’s requirements had been designed by Angel Technologies and Broadband.com. The VariViggen design led to the successful VariEze (pronounced “very straightforward”) homebuilt plane designs, in which he pioneered using moldless glass-reinforced plastic construction in homebuilts.
